Suicide Squad - Film Review
Film: Suicide Squad (2016)
Director: David Ayer
Running Time: 123 Minutes
Today, I will be reviewing, 'Suicide Squad' , there has been much hype surrounded around this film. Being made from the DC Comic, Task Force X this film had a big reputation to live up to.
For those who may not know what the film is about or watched it you may want to look away now **SPOILER ALERT**
This film is about a secret government agency which recruits some of the most dangerous super villains. Who bare in mind are still incarcerated !!!
They were chosen to form a defensive force to fight the apocalypse of the end of the world. They could not escape otherwise they would be killed yet the task they were given was labelled a suicide mission. * Hence the name :D*
I have to admit, I was looking forward to watching this film, finally a superhero film completely about the super villains . It gave the audience a new perspective on the antagonist. Getting insight into some of the villains stories, made you empathize why they have made the choice to become evil.
I also love seeing empowered female characters on the screen, but what I did not like is the way 'Harley Quinn', was portrayed in a sexual way their was scenes in the film that I felt took away from her hardcore , not afraid of anything persona.
This was linking to the male gaze, I feel it was only put in their for the utter pleasure of male viewers. For example when she was changing into the gear she entered prison in, there was a pause on her changing and all the guys around her even sneaking a peak. But there is more to her character than her sexuality.
The Male Gaze is 'when viewers are made to look at characters from a male perspective. Presenting women as objects of male pleasure' (Laura Mulvey, 1975)
Marvel films have managed to create their female characters as equal, rather than them playing always the damsel in distress. An example of this would be 'Black Widow' the female superhero protagonist in 'The Avenger's Assemble' and 'Captain America' Marvel films. Whilst still allowing the character to display her feminine side, we never lose sights of her boss behavior.
From the Black Widow to Harley Quinn major contrast
The ending was very abrupt and unsettling to the story line, as you leave wanting them to get their happily ever after. But I guess that would be too predictable. The harsh ending did although leave you wanting to know more. As well as empathize how the super villains will never catch a break once their labelled as the bad guy.
The soundtrack chosen for the film was very well put together and fit the theme. From Rick Ross to upcoming artists TWENTY ØNE PILØTS, their was a range of music styles to fit everybody's taste.
On a Scale Of 1 to 5 (Five being Amazeballs!! & 1 being the Worst)
RATING : 3
